Current Obessions pt. 1

Lately I've been really taking notice of the smaller details in order to create ... well create in general I suppose. I've done a lot of redecorating of my little apartment and still have a lot more to do. I've never been much at doing a lot to the places I've lived because (for the most part) I've lived with roomates or it was a temporary situation. Now that I live on my own and have total reign on how I want things to be, it's been a lot of fun going to antique stores and thrift stores and finding that ONE thing that will set everything else in motion. Once everything is a little bit more done, I'm going to be posting a tooon of photos.

So as I've said many times before, I love Nashville so much. Everything about it. The people, my apartment, my friends, my job, the local shops, the thrifting... the peacefulness. It's such a lovely and welcoming place to be. Not to mention homey.

I took this photo at 7 am this morning. This is what I get to see every day just out of my house. Isn't it lovely?

So right now my current obsessions are:
- Great vintage shoes! I found these babies for $5. They fit like a gem. Vintage Italian leather. I adore them and wear them with pretty much everything.
- My Canon AE-1. I HAVE to finish the roll in here soon, I'm dying to get it developed.
- I've always loved intricate designs in jewelry that you can still wear with a t-shirt and jeans. This one is my current favorite.
- I've been collecting green glass. It's makes my heart melt.
- Carrying a small journal on me keeps me motivated.
- Bergamote! It's been my favorite scent for a few months now. Yummmm.
- Lipstick - Duh!
- One of my favorite "work" watches.
- Dried Flowers.
- I've always collected old postcards. This one is my favorite. There is so much I find intriguing about them. I found it in St. Louis and it's from the town that I grew up (Muskegon Michigan). 1946. I wish postage was still 1c.

Do you ever feel like you have to be commanded to rest? Like, some military sergeant screaming in your face telling you take it easy?

Being in a profession that is consistently following timing and persistence usually trickles into daily life. I am a planner. I have a really hard time not having my entire day planned out (usually down to even exact eating times, gym times, etc etc... it's pretty bad, haha). Without having all of these plans and schedules, I feel like I'm constantly forgetting to do something or needing to be somewhere. I don't allow much time to just... REST. The restaurant that I work part time at is temporarily closed for renovation right now. My normal day would be to go from the salon to the restaurant immediately following, but since it's closed, I was able to get out at 2:30. TWO THIRTY! There is so much day left when you get out at 2:30! Of course I ran my errands that I had to have taken care of... and got a speeding ticket (for going over in a school zone... Though, I wasn't in the zone yet when he pulled me over!! bah), and came home and rested. I didn't turn my phone off silent, and I didn't clean my apartment right away like I need to. I just laid down. Ah, so nice.

The Scoop

I'm back and then I'm gone, I'm back and then I'm gone. Whew!
Obviously I've let my little blog go for quite some time. It's been hard for me to think about updating lately due to how busy things have been and for other reason's I will briefly mention.

I know it's been months and there is so much to say but here's basically a overview.

-I work between 60 - 70 hours a week. I'm back to doing hair and an amazing salon that I absolutely love! The girls are all great and I'm inspired daily. I'm also working as a hostess at a restaurant on some nights and weekends. Most days I leave the house as the sun is rising and finally get home in time to eat and go to bed. Also, both jobs have a dress code of basically black, white and grey so when it comes to my wardrobe, there's not much to be extremely creative with (enough for a fashion blog, at least).

-I've been in Nashville for 1 full year! Can you believe it?! I feel like I just moved here. It just blows my mind. I wish I would have kept up with the blog just to document my last year.

-Part of my disappearing is that I think my blog became something that I did for the wrong reasons. I did it at first because I wanted to merge my love of writing in with my love of photography and fashion.... then overtime, I let it become something that It wasn't. I started having a complex about the reasons of why I wanted to do it. Was I being vain? Why do I need all these pictures of me? Is this a popularity contest? Etc etc... Not that I think that that is what fashion blogging is about, but for my own personal reasons, I decided to step back and see if I was still drawn to it for the reasons I first started blogging for. I don't know if that makes sense.
After much thought, and obviously my love and missing of the blogging world, I want this to be what it is... a personal blog. Whether it's style, or personal... music or inspiration. It's just a blog, and It's mine. Whew... kinda feels good to get that out.

-Also, I'm blonde now. Of course it's different haha. I think I change my hair color more than I buy a new pair of shoes. Speaking of.. I don't really buy "new" anything anymore. Most of my clothes that I've purchased are from vintage shops, or thrift stores. Also, friend exchanges.

I don't really know how often I'll have picture posts just because It's hard to find someone to take them, but I'll be around.

Big changes

Hey everyone! I've done a lot of changes in my life. Big changes. I've actually (along side this one, no... moderndaycharm isn't going anywhere) started a new food blog. I've decided to take a challenge that started almost 2 weeks ago. It's a gluten free, sugar free, dairy free, caffeine free, and alcohol free 30 day challenge. It was supposed to start with my friend Katie and we created a joint blog, but she hasn't started it yet, so all the posts are by me. It's full of rants and raves and recipes!

I was sick for a few months and not getting better and noticed that after I ate certain foods, I would be really bad. I couldn't figure out which foods did it, so I that's when I decided to take this challenge, and boy... do I feel so much better! I can't believe the turn around. I've also been working out vigorously which has been a lot of fun. So if you want to check it out, feel free! I've been having a lot of fun making and finding new blogs and recipes.

I've actually been thinking about continuing after the 30 days because of how I feel. It ends March 20th.

Smell the Roses

Hope you're all fairing well with all this snow that hit everyone! Nashville actually didn't get any. We got a type of monsoon rainstorm and fast winds. I'll take that though. I love seeing your photos though.... Glad I'm not there!

This cozy shirt came from a swap with my friend Rebecca. It was a deary day here in Nashville and I like how the cutesy print made things a little more lovely.

Sometimes I like to stop and see how things have evolved around me and within me from time to time. I think it's a great way to appreciate the things that you have, due to outcome, as well as the things that you've lost. I think it's easy to sit back and think about this in a negative light. Training yourself to think them in a positive light is hard but worth the time and energy. Imagine if things always went your way. Would you be happy? I know I wouldn't be. It's not about how hard you've worked for something and it just to end up as dust, it's about learning about yourself in how you react and how you grow. We find ourselves growing, healing, appreciating, losing, running, fighting, gaining, and reacting... it's all a time of learning. I think it's important to take the blinders off once in a while and just sit and think about how you really feel. I've had a few days like this recently and I've felt really great-full. I know some pretty amazing and talented people that I can learn from and share with. I live in a lovely town, have a great and quaint apartment with two awesome roommates. If you would have even asked me last year if I would be where I am right now, knowing the people I know and doing the things I do, I would have never believed you. Then I think back and I can say that about every year since I turned 17. Change isn't scary but a welcomed idea for me. My mindset has become something of a "why not?" rationality than anything. Life is too short to have every hour planned for you for the next year... or rest of your life.

I found this vintage coach purse at a thrift store on a half off day! A whopping $3!!

Nashlove

Ever since I've been to Nashville, I've really not gone out of my way to find the gems. For some reason, I've found my favorite places through other people showing me and keep going back. Don't get me wrong, those places are lovely, which is why I frequent them so much... but I've gotten really comfortable with just doing the same things.

Today, Craig and I (the mind behind young whale clothing) had a short amount of time to drive around and try and find some spots to shoot. I was called into work today, so our morning was cut quite a bit. We ended up stumbling upon this wall! It's so awesome. He didn't even know it was there and he's lived here for a while! You gotta appreciate a Willie wall!

I love Nashville. It's nothing that is a surprise I'm sure.... but I seriously love this place so much. Art, culture, music... through and through.... this place is saturated with diversity. I love that I can drive downtown and find a wall like this. I love that I'm going to a venue tonight that has 8 awesome bands playing for free for three songs each to "sample" them. I love that it is so easy to meet people here. Love! Love! Love!

A welcomed break

I don't know about you all, but 2011 pretty much has ruled in every way possible so far.
This last month has been full of visitors, visits, new food, friends and goals. It's been pretty interesting actually how many lovely lads and ladies I've seen from STL this month. It's been so nice.

My friend Rebecca wanted a quick get away for 24 hours and the only thing we could afford, of course, was STL due to the fact that I knew all free things and had a place to stay. I didn't really tell anyone that I was going to be there except a quick shout out on facebook and twitter because it was a very spontaneous trip as well. It was so much fun and was pressure free. I was able to take her around to all my favorite spots and restaurants. It really is a great city to visit.

Our trip down was a bit crazy. A 4.5 hour drive turned in to 10 hours! It was nuts. There was a "snow storm" here in Nashville and we sat on the highway for 2.5 hours in park and later got backed into and had to wait around for the cops for all the paperwork.

This dress is precious and super comfortable. This is a swap with my friend Jordan. She has the sweetest style.

This weekend has been/is going to be so nice! Today the temp is 64!!! I love it. The rest of the week is supposed to be high 40's to high 50's too! It's a nice break from how cold it was for a little while there. I love living in the south!

Nearing the New Year.

Hope everyone had a lovely holiday! I can't believe New Years eve is tomorrow! I'm so ready for this year to be done. This year has been so insane! This year has been full of changes, learning discernment of what is healthy and unhealthy for my well being, and being open to new possibilities. The past year I had three different jobs, road tripped, made so many long lasting friendships in Saint Louis, moved to Nashville, made a great group of friends here, started blogging, went to what felt like a million shows, been hurt, loved, broken down, and opened up. I continue to break down walls, but them back up, and break them down again (something I need to work on).

I usually don't make New Years resolutions, but I feel like my list is a mile long this go around. I drew it because it seemed like more fun. These are just a few.

I'm such a goal oriented person that I need to have things to aim for. The most important part is to aim for reasonable things so I don't get overwhelmed. Is anyone else making New Years resolutions this year?

My lovely friend Parker Fitzgerald who calls Portland has been in town twice since I've moved here. He's an amazing photographer (one of my favorites ever... and I'm not afraid to tell him!). He shoots pretty much all 35 mm, Medium Format, or Vintage Polaroids. Throughout this year he has been doing a 365 Polaroid quote project. I've followed his work at least a year and was so excited when he asked me to be a part of it! I wanted to wait to post them so he could put a few up so I could show you all at once. There will be more so keep checking back to his flickr account as well as just checking it out to be inspired.

Fourth Friday Feature

Hello Everyone! Merry Seasons Greetings!!! I hope you're all eating more than your body weight and playing games with your grannies. A while back when I relaunched my Blog, I decided I wanted to do things differently than before. I've decided to do a 'Fourth Friday Feature.' Fourth Friday Features will be my favorite blogs due to inspiration and warm fuzzies. They wont all necessarily be fashion blogs, they might be photo blogs, music blogs, or cooking blogs... or anything else that sparks a warm fuzzy or I find inspirational. They will appear on the fourth Friday of every month and this month just happens to fall on Christmas Eve! For my first feature, there was no question who I would feature first. She has been such an amazing motivator for me as well as friend and lovely blogger.

Some of you know that I used to live in Michigan and Tieka and I used to live about 30 min away from each other. We both loved the music scene and I would constantly see her and Brett at shows. We actually didn't start our friendship while I was living there but after I had moved out of state. I've been a follower of her blog since I knew there were fashion blogs. She featured me a while back and has been a constant motivator. We all love her sweet charm and her darling style. How could she not be my first feature!

1) Tieka, your blog has been an inspiration for so many girls for quite a while now, where do you see your blog in the future?

I'm always thinking about this, to be honest! I started my blog with the original thought that it might not always be a personal style blog - but a blog to document my life, my personal style, my marriage and the trips we take and the memories we've had. I think in the future it might turn into something more like a Rockstar Diaries style - where I post more posts about our life instead of trying to constantly take 3-4 outfit shots a week, which can be quite stressful. When I'm a mom (someday in the FAR future), I'm sure there will be posts there too. I'm not trying to define my blog.. just trying to take it a day at a time and see what happens!

2) Did you ever see your blog becoming what it is today? Absolutely not. When I first started my blog, it was intentionally for me to look back on my life - to read about memories, to see photos, to share with my friends and family. When I got into personal style, I thought.. how fun is this concept? So I tried it out and here I am a year later. It's been an amazing process - I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I couldn't be happier with the outcome. It's been a dream come true.

3) What keeps you motivated to keep posting as often as you do in the cold winter months with short days, a new job, and an amazing husband?

The only reason I continue to still blog is because I honestly have so much fun with it. It's a lot of work and maintaining and keeping up with emails and everything else, but I wouldn't spend my spare time any other way. I have a blast styling up outfits, taking photos, going on adventures and documenting it all in my blog. Even if I had no readers, my blog would still be the same way it is today. It's just fun. I always tell new bloggers that are starting up - don't start for fame or followers, you'll never stay motivated. You have to have fun with it!

4) What is on your winter playlist?

Currently I'm in love with some old-school punk rock for some strange reason! I go in fads, but right now I can't stop playing Osker's - Idle Will Kill album! Every single song is amazing.

5) What other passions do you have besides fashion?

I absolutely love graphic design and digital media. When I'm not blogging, I love designing blog layouts, or perusing through design magazines. My job is a huge passion of mine - I'm a graphic designer for a communications company - and I honestly don't mind staying an hour or more longer than I have to or always constantly having design meetings at lunch with co-workers. It's so fun. I also love taking trips with my husband and we also play in a band together - that is a blast. Life is super busy, but because I'm passionate about everything - I'm loving every second.

6) What are your favorite blogs right now?

My favorite blogs right now are Delightfully Tacky, Orchid Grey, Jen Loves Kev, Greer, Fancy Fine, Lulu Letty, Rockstar Diaries.. and of course, Modern Day Charm.

Rainy Wonderland

Well Nashville has been feeling a lot like winter lately! I thought the more south I went, the warmer it would be! It's been pretty bitter cold and we even had a pretty bad snow storm the other day. What is nice though is that it melts pretty much that day or the day after that. Today has just been rainy. I like rainy dark days though. It makes me feel inspired... well most times. Sometimes it just makes me want to stay in and watch movies all day.

Today I went to my friend, Craigs house. He has his own clothing line that is fairly new that he wanted me to "model" for. The shirts are so cute and I'm excited to post them once they're done. It was a lot of fun.

I've been trying really hard to get into the Holiday spirit lately. It's hard without the lights and the decorations, but none of my roommates or I are home very often and we're all going to be gone for the holidays so it kinda seemed pointless to go out and spend money on decorations. We've talked about hanging bulbs from our antlers (that I used to display the clutch on my last post), haha. My parents live in Pennsylvania, so I'll be heading there from the 21st - 27th. They always do the real tree and the decorations so I guess I'll get my fix that way.

This time of year makes me become a hugeeee hermit. I can't help it. I love being inside, warm and under blankets. I just got a free trial of Netflix, haha. Lately I've just making dinner, drinking red wine, and either reading or watching movies. Lot's of alone time, which is good for me sometimes.

My Little Black Dress

The holidays are coming up and that can mean many things. A few of mine: amazing scented Cinnamon and/or peppermint candles, baking, warm scarves, layers, family, home cooked meals, staying in, watching movies, and traveling. I'm taking about a week off to go see my family in Pennsylvania this year and I'm scrambling to jam as many hours as I can pick up at work so I can pay for my bills when I get home!

Last night I went to a senior exhibition for my friends school. It's for their graphic designers to show their portfolios. This year there were only two graduates so it was a quick look. They had free wine, beer and hor'dourves. It was held in the Icon building (a building full of condos that go from anywhere between $180,000 to $5 mil). They were giving tours so we of course, jumped on it. We took a tour of a $400,000 condo that overlooks downtown. I've always wanted to have a loft in some downtown city in the rush of it all but now that things are slowing down for me, the more that a small house sounds even more appealing. If I did have a loft, it wouldn't be like these. My loft would be in a revamped warehouse where I can still blast my music and have tall ceilings and art spaces (one can dream right?). Yes they were beautiful, but I felt like I was in a hotel. They had a pool, lazy river, huge fitness facility, and "camera's literally everywhere." I wouldn't want my house to be like a hotel. I know a few people that live there and I know they're great, just not my thing. It was kind of a realization for me for the most part that it's something that I've stopped aiming for now that I'm figuring myself out a bit more.

Catching Fire

Man, It feels good to be back. I love looking forward to reading all your blogs and posting my next one. I get so excited. I've been doing a lot of brainstorming about things I want to have in this new revamp of my blog. I have a few things on paper right now but I'm really excited to put together including my first giveaway and my first featured blogger ever! I may do some music mixes and maybe even some posts with some recipes (I've been really into baking lately). Ideas are definitely a'brewin'.

Lately I've been reading The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins and they've really sucked me in! I can't put it down. I'm on the last book and I've been stalling on finishing it because I don't want them to be over. I read books that either make me think or that take me completely away. This is one of the books that just takes me away. If you're into Harry Potter and books like that, (take-me-away-books) I definitely recommend them. Has anyone else read them? I'm open to suggestions on my next book or series since I'll be done with these soon!!

My good friend Chris Mullins (his blog and website HERE) took some photos of me the last time he was in Nashville. He' is an amazing photographer that I've secretly obsessed over his work but try to play it cool because he's my friend, haha. Everything but the tights, shoes and hat have been swapped with my friend Michelle Fraley. We both were bored with our closets this summer and although she lives in Cali, we both sent eachother pretty hefty boxes of lovely digs. I was really excited about the jacket because I have/had the same one that walked away and is now missing. It was always my favorite, so it was nice to be able to wear it again.

A Tennessee Welcome.

Ahh hello!!!! I'm so excited to be writing and posting again. I had some time left on my little counter but everything got done early so I decided to just go ahead with it!

Nashville has been so good to me, I however had a lot of adjusting to do. I ended up moving rather quickly and sooner than I thought I was going to be. It was about 2 weeks from actual decision time, quiting my job, and then the day of the move.

I've not been able to do hair in a salon yet. My license is still in transition from Missouri to Tennessee, and without a license you can't do hair. Bleh. I am working at a pretty cool restaurant right now though called Sambuca. I'm a hostess and I really love everyone I work with. The manager's couldn't be better and the staff has become a great friends group. I've gotten really close with the girls that I hostess with and they have become sisters. I love having girls in my life again. I live with two great guys which are really great people, but a girl just needs her girl friends sometimes.

So now that I'm here and I'm posting again, I am changing a few things. I've really had to cut back due to a pretty big income cut so I'm not shopping unless it's thrifting or super-sale-clearance style. I also am trying to do only clothing exchanges, hand-me downs and alterations of old clothes. I used to get kinda over whelmed when I went thrifting because it would be like sensory overload, but now that I've kinda made myself get over it, I've been finding some great pieces. This is also good because I started this blog trying to get more creative with my closet and now I'm forced to which has been pretty fun.

This is one of my favorite casual looks this fall. Blazers can add a little fashion to any outfit for the most part. The dark color scheme looks a little brighter with my scarf. As many of you know, I love layering and textures so this time of year is my favorite.

So also as you can see, the bright red hair didn't last too long, hah! I just didn't feel like myself, even though I liked it at the time. I still have a red in my hair, especially on the ends, but its over all brown.

I am so excited about these shoes!! I've been wanting a pair like these for a while. There is a thrift store right down the street from me that has half off everything in the store on Mondays. I went there with a few friends that were visiting from Saint Louis. I wasn't even looking to buy anything and I swear a light was shining down on them and angles were calling my name, haha. They cost a total of $3.50. SCORE!

Thanksgiving was great. I went to a friends house that is self titled "The Estate." It's the first house I ever stayed in and the first people I met here when I first visited Nashville so it has that homey feeling to me every time I step in it. There were probably close to 20 people that showed up and restored my faith in our generation with the grandeous amount of amazing food.

I just wanted to thank my readers for all the great feedback, comments, and love from all of you. It's been a crazy few months and you're all so awesome for sticking around. Also, THE talented, awesome, handsome, and friendly friend that did my Layout revision was Matt Holman!! I love love love it! Thanks!!!

Hey everyone I need your advice! Spotted Moth is so kind to supply me with a garment. Have you been to their store? (click HERE to check it out) So cute!!! Basically after taking FOREVER to narrow down what I wanted, I couldn't decide (like i said, they're all sooooo cute)! . So here's where I need your help.

Help me pick which piece to get and see me style it here three different ways! I will choose whichever gets the most votes! Then stop by their store and see the darling gems they have.

Bad Blogger here.
I'm so sorry. Thank you all for sticking around.
I ALMOST didn't post today's photos, because for some reason the picture quality didn't turn out the greatest, but as I was catching up on my blog reading, I saw that Tieka of Selective Potential wore this same dress on the same day (which happens to be her birthday so go wish her happy birthday!!)! It's pretty fun to see how we both paired up this dress. Tieka and I have always been blogbuddies so I felt like this situation was totally worth grainy photos.. and hey, I photoshopped them enough to look okay.

So as you can see, I'm a Ginger now! I must say, life on the ginger side has been a lot of fun! It had been a long while since I had updated my hair color, so this was quite a change. So far the response has been mostly good. I've gotten a few of the "ehh... what's that on your head" responses but I love it. I'll definitely be keeping it for a while.

Summer has been quite a whirl wind. Last update I talked about getting ready to go to NYC. I unfortunately had to cancel the trip due to lack of funds. Thank you all for supplying me with links and ideas to find a platinum dress! You are all such lovelies!

We have a new addition to our little family here in my tiny apartment! In previous posts, some photos were taken by Cassidy Knight who lives in Michigan. Well... LIVED in Michigan! He is now living with us for the summer! We're all so happy that he is here. He's also a fabulous vegan cook, so here comes healthy food!!

For this post, I tried to mix up my closet a little bit. I was thinking, texture texture texture. Everything in this outfit (minus the belt) is something I've always had hidden in the back of my closet. I thought I'd take them out and try to wear them a different way.

Tonight a group of us are going to go see Shakespeare in the Park! It's a free play held every summer where they show a Shakespeare play for a few weekends. This is the last night and we're all going to go lay out a blanket and listen to St. Louians speak Old English while drinking wine with some of the coolest people I've met. I'm pretty excited.

Brown and Black

The big apple NYC trip is coming up for me pretty quickly. Just a few more weeks! I wish I would be able to do some shopping while I'm there, but because it was a fairly quick mandatory trip planned, I feel like I've been swimming in stress of being so broke. I'd, however, take this just because I like my new job so much. I just need to get more clients so I can get back on my feet.

I'm now on the search to find a "platinum" dress for a platinum party I'll be attending while I'm there. Hopefully I can find one not at a "platinum" price and keep it under $20. It should be an amazing experience and quite the sight to see with everyone dressed to the nines in a unison color. For those of you that don't know, along with being a hairstylist, I am also an educator for PureOlogy. NYC is more of a training weekend called Synergy. When I went to Orlando, I was there working at a hair convention.

This weekend has been both over the top and relaxing all at the same time. Friday a few friends and I went to go see POP IS PERSONAL [The gallery of Joseph Cultice] ( look him up on google, he's an amazing photographer from LA/NYC that has shot for pretty much everyone). We went towards the end of the the night. Joseph is a really cool man and ended up coming along with us after his showing to a wine bar called Sashas and then to SOL lounge for a little dancing and drinks. He and a few people ended up coming back to my cute little apartment and we all hung out and talked. I ended up watching the sun come up and after about two hours of sleep I was at work. That night I just stayed in and relaxed.

Sometimes I surprise myself at how random my life can be sometimes. haha. I can only imagine someone actually trying to keep up with me from an outside perspective! I'm so appreciative of all you lovely readers who take the time to ready about my nonstop action life. haha.

Today Kate and I went out back in my ally to take these shots. I'm glad we did it when we had the chance because literally right when we walked back upstairs it started pouring. It's been doing that a lot here lately. High 90's, high humidity, and random thunderstorms. After about 10 minutes of a huge thunderstorm it is now silent with the sun out. I guess Saint Louis gets a little bit of everything.

I've always been someone to wear black and brown together. I never really understood what people find wrong with it. I figure if your browns match for the most part, why not?

Lastly, I was asked to do a review for LaShae Jewelry. I picked this ring (cobblestone ring 2).

I absolutely love this ring! It fits amazing and is really really comfortable. I was afraid when I ordered it it would be heavy and it isn't at all. It also came within two days of my order. The only thing I could possibly say negative about this company is that I found the website to be hard navigate through. Other than that, I love love love my ring and It fits my style perfectly. They also have a section for their promise rings if you and your love are into that sorta thing. ;)

SOOOOO now that I've asked three things of you, I'm excited to let you in on a little secret! Modern Day Charm is about to get a FACELIFT! My good friend, Matt Holeman is taking care of me. I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

Now that we're through with business, today I was able to do some hair and make-up for a test shoot for models ready for print and runway! Hopefully this will open some doors for me as far as more print work. Of course being around a shoot with three beautiful 6 foot models all day wearing great pieces made me incredibly inspired. Leather, denim, stilettos, zippers and florals, oh my! Jewlery with spikes, skulls and charms... bracelets think and thin.... sooooo good.

Andrew Wilkinson Stop Motion !!!!

EEEP! I'm so excited! Andrew Wilkison made a stop motion video of Kate and I during our shoot yesterday! We had no intention to make it a stop motion, which I think is even better since you can catch how silly we are. I love it and I hope you guys do too!

It had been three years since Kate and I had a shoot together. Usually it's either her shooting me or me shooting her so we were really excited to have the opportunity to spend the day with such a talented photographer. He took us to this amazing location in Illinois that was seriously soooo breathtaking, as you can see. I feel like I haven't seen beauty like that since I was last in Michigan. You really take it for granted when you are consistently surrounded by traffic and buildings (even though I love that too).

Keep moving

It's been a while since my last post. In part, I've lost my camera charger and I can't really do a fashion blog without a camera ... (so if anyone has a spare canon powershot charger, let me know!). I've also had so many changes going on that It's hard to keep up with anything but holding on to the rollercoaster!

So... since my last post, I've changed jobs, been to Chicago once and Nashville twice and had many-a-visitors stay in my lovely abode that I've not seen for years and managed to still attend some events here in Saint Louis! I'll be going to Orlando this weekend, and NYC the end of June for work... told you! Crazy!

I'm now working at the amazing salon/studio Studio 703. I have the greatest schedule ever (every other weekend a 4 day weekend) so that I can visit family and friends that live out of state and travel for work, as well as work along some of the greatest talent I've ever seen. Everyone is so supportive and artistically inclined in not only hair, but photography/photo shoots as well. Hopefully, I'll be able to dip my toe into doing hair or make up for fashion photography coming up!

While I was in-between jobs, I decided I wanted to take time to myself to be totally and completely spontaneous. So basically, If anything was thrown my way, I wouldn't hesitate to go or do. This was a challenge for myself because I am such a planner. Turns out, as soon as I made this decision, I was on my way to Chicago to visit some friends and get a new perspective. Chicago was beautiful and I was so happy to be there with familiar faces while meeting new people. Around a week or so later, a friend from Springfield, MO (about 4 hours away) of mine asked me if I wanted to go to Nashville with 2 people I've never met before. Basically they'd be picking me up on their lunch break. I got the call at three in the morning and was on the road that afternoon. I spent about 4 days there. It was exactly what I needed. The people that I know there and met while I was there are some of the most genuine people I've ever met in my life. There is something about Nashville that I never understood before and something that I'm not going to even try and explain because I really can't even begin. But basically the community and how they treat each other is something amazing and beautiful and I've never felt so welcomed into a community like I felt when I was there. So when I got back and Kate said she wanted to go that weekend to see some friends only a few days later, I couldn't say no. We were there only a few days and when I came back I started my new job right away.

With that big stuff covered, I've also been on plenty of picnics, night drives, gaining closer relationships with new friends, connecting to my past (very healing), as see my lovely friends in the band Farewell Flight (so good, check them out) play and let the stay on my floor as well as attend a costumed Studio 54 Party... Whew! I feel like that catches us up.

So the last few days, I've gone on two photoshoots. One with Kate (Photography name: Kathryn Moore) and Andrew Wilkinson... Hence the opportunity to update my fashion blog! Andrew is actually going to make a stop motion video of the day today that I'm super excited to see! I'll make sure I post it on here as soon as I get it!

Pins & Needles Fashion Show

Hey everyone! I'm really excited to feature my good friend Dwight Carter! Dwight is the owner of Rock Uniform Style & PR. He is putting on a Fashion Show this weekend in St. Louis called "Pins & Needles." It is a fashion show dedicated to Rock and Roll! Check it out!

Fashion in St. Louis is an ever building task and I'm so excited to support him in this! He's been putting in a lot of effort and work in helping put St. Louis on the map for a fashion go-to spot. I decided to ask him a few questions to get a look at what something like this entails.

1.Dwight, how long have you been planning fashion shows? When and how did you start out?

I have been planing shows for about 5 years now. I worked on my first big show with Jeff and Mary Clarke. The show was called Threads 4 Hope. The Clarkes run a model management company called Mother Model Management. They ran a model search within the fashion show and I ran the designer search. Im more into the concept development side of fashion shows. I like artistic visuals before, during and after the show.

2.Pins and Needles is an interesting name for a fashion show, did you
create that or did it come from an outside source?

The girls from Lucky You Productions (my Pins & Needles partners) came up with the name.

3.You've certainly created a buzz in Saint Louis for fashion and
entertainment alike, why choose Saint Louis and not any big
fashion/entertainment cities such as LA or NYC?

St. Louis is starting to catch up to the bigger cities as far as fashion is concerned. Incorporating a St. Louis Fashion Week has really helped launch St. Louis into the fashion scene. I was born in St. Louis but love to travel to NYC and Chicago. The designers I see there are no different from the Lindenwood, Stephens and Washington University Students in Missouri. There are also a couple of underground designers that no one has heard of...this was my reason for putting together shows like Project:Design! and Pins & Needles.

4.Marketing for a music/art based atmosphere in Saint Louis has to be
tough, what are some obstacles you've hit and how did you overcome
them?

Getting St. Louis to understand whats going on and support it. I like crazy artistic fashion! Have you ever heard of the book FRUiTS? FRUiTS is filled with cool colorful Japaneese street fashion. I like to mix colors and experiment with my closet. I tend to be interested in designers with odd paterns and shapes. Designers that are out of the norm and max out their creativity. When I put a show together I also like to make the room and the people in room visual eye candy. Pins & Needles has lots of surprises from the beginning till the end. This show will be talked about!

5.Where do you see St. Louis in five or ten years from now regarding
Fashion? What can we do to keep the buzz alive?

I see a ton of designers coming out of St. Louis to be featured in other Fashion Weeks around the country. We need to support our local designer by purchasing their products and supporting them at shows.

Ever Changing

Sometimes we all go through transformations... some changes are sudden and some take their time and change so slowly that it's hard to pinpoint when it actually began and if it's made its way to completion yet. I feel like this is happening to me all at once. Long term and short term moments in my life that make decisions hard and make the outcome unknown, some racing by and some that feel so stagnant I wonder if anything is happening at all. It may be the fact that I'm listening to one of the most inspiring songs I've ever heard that was given to me on a mix by an awesome friend, or the fact that I was in three different places with three different wonderful and amazing and real people that are now a part of my life, sharing our stories and our conflicts and opening our hearts to new possibilities... life right now seems like a dream. It makes times like this where I'm sitting on my couch with nothing but a blank slate for me to write whatever I feel a moment of reflection in my now ever racing life. Near my feet is a letter and cd sent to me from someone far away that was kind enough to share their thoughts using a sharpie with a corner of one of the pieces of paper torn out. I know some of the most talented and beautiful people on this planet and am meeting more every day. I know it sounds over-expressive, but my heart has never been at a more peaceful and conflicting place all at once.

When I think of all of you following my blog I get pretty overwhelmed. You all are such beautiful people with inspiring things to say and beautiful lives you live and I'm so happy you stop by. I want you all to know that you are appreciated. I think once I get 500 followers (between here and bloglovin') I'm going to do a give away! As of right now I'm at 355, so help me spread the word :).

This is my new party dress. It's verrryy red as you can see. It's so bright that it took out some detail while shooting the pictures. I love it and its super comfortable.

Black and Blue

WOW. It has been forever since my last update! I'm STILL not feeling the greatest. I'm so over it. I think whatever I had is gone but I'm now battling allergies and/or maybe a stubborn cold.

St. Louis has had some beautiful weather lately. It's been in the 70's-80's. My favorite thing right to do right now is to go out to the park, bring a blanket, and lay on the grass. I've been really blessed to meet such amazing people lately. I never realized how easy it is to meet people here before I really went out of my way to try. It's funny that I've been here a year and just within the past month have met everyone. I keep being asked if I've been in "hiding."

Opening myself up has always been a challenge for me. Kate has always joked about how she had to "earn" me. I used to have a barrier around everyone. Breaking down the walls is always scary, especially when I'm doing it all at once with so many people. Of course I've already seen the worst part of it and have already been misguided and hurt, but I keep reminding myself that trust comes with trust and beauty comes when you allow yourself to open yourself to see it.

I really love this vest. I think it's my favorite. I've always been a sucker for anything military looking. I wore this outfit out to see JFK of MSTRKRFT.

Recovery

I can't remember the last time I was sick. This one was a doozie. I don't think I've ever called into work for a sick day and I had two in a row (with a regular day off attached to make it 3 days without work). Today was the first day I went back into the swing of things at work and I almost have my voice back. I went from having no voice at all to sounding like a man. Awesome. I feel a little restless although I know I need to take care of myself and before I know it I'll be new again. I keep telling myself that so my cabin fever doesn't get too bad.

These photos are the last of the series taken by Derek Street and Cassidy Knight Photography. I just found out that Derek is coming back on Tuesday so maybe I can persuade him to take a few more blog shots (evil laugh).

So a lot of you have been asking some questions in the latest comments and I'm thinking about maybe doing an FAQ sometime coming up if I get enough questions. Feel free to email me with anything and I'll try to respond as quick as I can, or wait until I get enough to do this. I've also been thinking about a few ideas for my blog that I'm getting really excited about. Once I feel better, I'll be more motivated.

Hold Still.

Lot's of really exciting things happening for Modern Day Charm lately! Again a BIG thanks to Tieka/ Selective Potential for featuring me. She is so lovely! I'm sure you'll all agree. Thanks to all my new followers!

It's supposed to be 70 tomorrow! Holla! I can't wait. I'll be inside at work all day until 8pm, but at least I'll know its warmer out there.

Tonight Kate and I got in the car and drove to find a good location to watch the sunset and catch up on things going on in our lives. It was so much easier in Michigan! You could ALWAYS find a beautiful spot on the beach to see it. Here, there are tall buildings and lots of cars. I remembered a place I went to last fall to hike and I really want to go back now that the weather is getting warmer. Basically after driving around for a while and missing the sunset, we drove back home, poured some wine and sat on our balcony with blankets. There was so much that I've been thinking about lately but never really had the opportunity or time to try and figure out let alone express. She's truly an amazing person in my life.

I don't know if you guys ever do this, but some songs can help me through so much. I am a person directly affected by music and love when I can find something that speaks for me when I can't find the words. Yesterday I decided to start making a soundtrack of my life (pt. 1). Songs that help me remember, forget, make me frustrated, happy, and songs that explain my beliefs and apathy's. It's really exciting. I completely forgot about a song called "hold still" by sleeping at last. That song changed a lot for me and helped me grow as a person. I'll post the song at the bottom so you guys can check it out. Selective Potentials Featured Blogger!

I am so jazzed right now to have to honor to be Selective Potential's featured Blogger!!!!! Tieka is such an amazing girl and has supported me so much in my short time being a blogger. We're both from the same area in Michigan but never had the chance to really hang out, which is a total bummer. She's coming to see me this summer though so I CAN'T WAIT!

For my second featured blogger, I'd like to showcase a great friend and amazing blogger, Chandra from Modern Day Charm. She just recently started her own personal style blog and it has taken off, with such good reason. She was also named a Chictopia style icon for March! She has amazing style, has such an eye for gorgeous photography and is a down-right sweetheart. We grew up in the same town in Michigan and she now resides in St. Louis. I can't wait to visit her in spring! Be sure to check out this amazing girl! I love her.. so I'm sure you will too!

1.You're a pretty new blogger. What made you decide to start your own personal style blog?

Honestly I've had a few blogs in the past (non fashion related) and I never had the motivation to keep updating them! I want a place where I can merge memories, photography, and fashion together. I have a love for all three and never had an outlet before now. I also have a huge problem with getting really bored with my closet. I made this blog to keep me creative with what I have. A new item becomes old news to me before you can say “blog” so this definitely helps my pocket book. I feel like a little kid playing dress up in my own closet. I love throwing things together than I never thought of before. It's been an amazing experience and I never thought I would love it this much!

2. Where does your inspiration come from for your outfits?

My inspiration for my outfits is usually related to season, where I'm going, and what I have to do. I work at an upscale hair salon in St. Louis so most of my outfits have to be work appropriate so short skirts/dresses, jeans, holes, scuffed shoes/boots are inappropriate in my workplace (which is a bummer when I can't wear my favorite weathered boots with my outfits!). I work near 50 hours a week someweeks so most of my photos are taken while at work. Once the weather gets nicer and days get longer I'll be able to take more photos of what I wear off the clock. I also find inspiration from movies, music, blogs, and magazines. Layering has been so much fun with this weather so its great seeing how other people are layering their clothing!

3. For a career, you're a hair stylist. What made you go into that and does it affect your own personal style by making others stylish too?

Ooops! I kind of answered this in my last question! Throughout my blog I talk a lot about being a hair stylist how I love what I do. What I do is my passion and I love being able to make people feel beautiful. Ever since I was little I wanted to do hair but was afraid of what that meant as a long term career. I ended up going to college and got my associates degree. I was trying to find schools to transfer to and get my Bachelors as an English Major when I decided one day (practically on a whim) that if I didn't attempt to do hair then, I probably never would get the chance to again. Within the next week I was applying for grants to go to cosmetology school and a month later I started. With nothing but the outlook of “if I fail I always can go back and get my degree,” I jumped in full throttle. I'm so glad I made the decision to follow what I truly wanted to do. I can't imagine doing anything else. There is nothing better than seeing someone light up for the first time when they see themselves as a beautiful person. I take a lot of responsibility in being the best I can be at what I do and apply it to every single person in my chair every day. I love my guests and I appreciate them whole heartedly. How it affects my own personal style would be directly related to my hair color! It changes frequently.

4.What is another passion of yours besides fashion?

Obviously being a hairstylist is huge but also music. Listening and attending shows alike is something I absolutely love to do. I love going to shows both big and local and taking it all in. Music connects people on a level that is unlike anything else. I've made many solid friendships by attending shows and sharing music. When you're in the car and your singing at the top of your lungs to music that is so loud it surrounds you accompanied by your favorite people... well... what's better than that? That's how I feel about going to a show as well. Listening to your favorite music being played live with emotion and lights and passion while surrounded by a group of people that are there for the exact same reason as you and share the same interests is something truly amazing.

5. What are some of your favorite places to shop?

I have a confession! I'm terrified of online shopping! The whole clicking the button without trying it on and it getting to me without it working out and the whole hassle of returning it and such is just so intimidating to me! Whew, now that that is out there, I strongly believe you should support your local boutiques. I will go to the boutiques near me before I go to a major chain. If I can't find anything there or if I'm in a rush and know I need a specific thing, then my favorite stores are Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Bakers, Shi, and H&M are the stores I frequent most. I have made a decision though that I need to start getting over my fear. I constantly scan online stores like Modcloth, Top Shop and even Etsy always wishing I could just commit and press the button! I will eventually turn over a new leaf, wish me luck!

6. How would you describe your style? Or how do you want to be known?

I would describe my style as easy to wear and comfortable. I love anything that looks romantic (lace, ruffle, airy textures, florals, light tints, etc). I also love coupling things together that contrast a look... military boots with a lacy dress, a masculine look with a lacy head wrap for example. Most of my clothing is solid and I don't wear much print unless its subtle or in my accessories (mostly scarves). I love texture in an ensemble. Textured tights with a floral skirt, an airy blouse with a intricate hemmed neckline peaking out wrapped in a belt.

7. You're currently in St. Louis, MO. What's your favorite thing about your town?

My favorite thing about Saint Louis would have to be the area I live in. I live in a part of town called The Loop (check out the websitehttp://visittheloop.com/). It's only 6 blocks big but is full of boutiques, bars, music venues, restaurants from all over the world, music venues, art galleries, vintage shops, and more. Everything is in walking distance (except where I work) and I love it. Just today I sat outside on our balcony for a while watching the rain come down and heard saxophones in the air. There's always something going on and tons of musicians playing on the streets. I love being in such a diverse area. It's truly a melting pot. In the summer it's always ablast to just people watch. On the weekends when the weather is nice there are drum circles right across the street from my apartment. Anyone can come and play and usually a ton of people do. I've seen fire throwers, belly dancers, street-side robotic dancers, and a rollerblading dance show. Pretty awesome and you never know what to expect!

8. What are some of your favorite blogs currently?

Since I'm new to this whole blogging world I'm still trying to find all the gems! There are so many impressive and beautiful blogs out there! Not to be a huge mushy gush, but I love your blog, Selective Potential. I'm always excited when I see a blog update! Also I've been loving Kendi Every Day andJune Paski.

9. Name some of your favorite bands.

Where to begin! Lets see, currently I'm obsessed with: Paper Route, Manchester Orchestra, Sigur Ros, Iron and Wine, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Trent Dabbs, Beruit, Band of Horses, Snow Patrol, Andrew Bird, Keane, and Jimmy Eat World... just to name a few

10. Any tips or advice for new bloggers who are trying to make their own way?

HAVE FUN! I want you to feel like a little kid playing dress up in your own closets! Keep your own style, if you only do what other people are doing, you'll lose your motivation and eventually lose your momentum. Find what your comfortable in in your own style. Don't be afraid to push your own personal envelope. Push forward! I know when I first started my blog I got a lot of (in a fun way) “beef” for it, but now those people are reading it and encouraging me every day

The last few days have been so amazing. I'm sorry I've been a bad blogger! Exciting things coming up and I can't wait to share them. This weekend Cassidy Knight and Derek Street visited from Michigan.

As you guys can probably tell, my life has been pretty crazy! A few days ago I got an email that sparked an urgent need to take legit photos (hint: GLAMOUR!!!). Derek and Cassidy are both amazing photographers so we decide to hit the town and take some photos. I'll update one outfit today and save the rest for the next few blogs. I live in such an amazing part of St. Louis where the streets are always buzzing. These photos were taken in my back yard! I hope you like it.

The weather here has been really rejuvenating as well. In the high fifties and sixties. Especially with the time change, I feel really good.

Kate is finally home and we've finally reunited! I missed that girl. This is us beaming on the way to get lunch. I LOVE this girl.

Stripes and Stripes Forever

Wow! What a whirlwind things have been lately! Kate has been in LA for the week so I've been trying to experience what St. Louis has to offer while not being lame and stuck at home by myself. To be out of my norm has been quite refreshing! I've met so many people this last week and have been having a blast. I never ever knew St. Louis had so much going on every night! It's given me a whole new perspective on this city.

Saturday I randomly and by total chance met (now) friends from Nashville that are in a band called We the City. Check them out. (Fashion blog related, they look pretty fashionsnazzy!) I was meeting a friend to go to a birthday party when I saw their name on the door. I recognized it from FB but had no idea they were playing at Ciceros. Long story short, they're pretty great people. Went to my friend Phil's birthday party and had a lonngg and great night.

Monday I went to Upstairs lounge, a small "dive" club/bar in the city. Had a great time and met new friends and Tuesday I went to Flamingo bowl (bowling ally/bar). Everyone has been so awesome. I know I keep saying that, but really.... I'm so happy I'm meeting such amazing people! Since I moved to St. Louis I never really met people I'd see a lot except work friends and Kate. I love this whole new world!

Tonight I'll be out at Automic Cowboy to meet everyone. There are some pretty rad DJ's that "spin"(is that the right phrase? haha) there and tomorrow wine with my friend Emily! yay!

Today I Wore...

This "dress" is actually a skirt! I haven't worn it in forever because it was always too long and kind of hard to style. I tried it this way today and really liked it. I think its going to be my spring/summer staple.

I thought I would mix the horizontal stripes in my belt to the vertical stripes in my skirt. Ended up really liking the patterns together!

I love finding music that speaks to me. All of my favorite music or songs have ways to say things that I've never been able to find the right words for. Manchester Orchestra is one of those bands for me right now (and have been for the past year or so). If you've heard Manchester Orchestra, you'd probably laugh that I listen to them Full blast in my car. They have a pretty hard sound to them, but I LOVE them.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. I'm sad that Kate will be gone for the week (she will be in LA). Friday is pretty open and Saturday I want to be three places at once! Two shows and a birthday bash. I wish I could go to all three, but I need to start making decisions. Sunday is supposed to be 60 Degrees here!!! I'm planing a picnic in the park with a group of friends!

I'm so happy that the days are getting longer and it's slowly getting warmer. It just makes everything better!

Lately I've been doing a lot of thinking about where I put efforts and when I to extend myself with friendships and when to back off. Knowing when something is not going beyond an acquaintance and when something is going to break walls down and get real.

I want to be around people who need me as much as I need them.
Like everyone else, I have trust issues that I'm working out, but this is huge to me. Once I trust I can never go back on that person.

Sunday Switch

Lately I've been focusing on doing things I normally wouldn't do or couldn't do even a few months ago. I've been trying to extend myself to experiencing new things, as I've mentioned in my previous posts. This weekend was amazing!!

Technically, my weekends don't really start until Saturday. I work every Saturday morning bright and early so friday night usually isn't anything special for me. This friday, Kate and I stayed in, watched movies, drank wine, and enjoyed nutella with pretzels. Perfect right? I love staying in sometimes and just having girlie evenings. Saturday was a busy day for me at work so by the time I got home, I had to listen to a whole lot of Two Door Cinema Club and Manchester Orchestra to get pumped up :). I've always wanted to attend London Calling, and last night was my first time of many more to come hopefully.

London Calling is an Underground Dance club that plays a lot of amazing indie music remixes. Plenty of super cute and fashionable gents and ladies show up with party on their brains. It's held at different venues and is only held about twice a month to keep it "underground." Last night there were two dj groups(one featuring Greg Corner from Kill Hannah (never heard them but whatevs.)) and it was set up as a battle of the djs. SOOO funn! Met tons of amazing people. Wore LEATHER pants... which hopefully I'll be able to post soon. There are a few photographers on site the whole night at london calling, It will definitely be interesting to see how embarrassing the photos may be! I saw so many lovely faces again and danced until I couldn't anymore. I loved it. It's amazing how different it is to go to a dance club set up with indie kids and going to a regular club. There were no creepy wall flowers and none of that gross "dance behind you" uncomfortableness that strange men decide to think is really flattering (which isn't). Everyone was there just to have fun. The dj's were amazing.

TODAY I wore....

I've been wearing this flower in my hair lately to help rush along spring. It may or not be helping, however it was almost 50degrees here today and Sunny.... I think it might be helping :). Maybe St. Louis should thank me... joking, joking....

So I'm not sure why or how it's taken me this long to actually listen to Appleseed Cast, but I'm pretty bummed I've gone all these years without them in my life. They're playing here on the 20th of March and I can't wait to see them.

I can't believe March is already here! I've been waiting so long for it. There are a lot of things happening. Tuesday I'm going to go rekindle my love for Sherwood, a band I used to listen to a long time ago (who is also playing with Black Gold), Aqualung is Saturday! David Bazan (Former Pedro the Lion) is Playing on the 14th, My good friend Andrew Koji will be here to play on the 25th, and Murder by Death on the 31st!!!!! Eeeep I can't wait!!

PLUS there has been mucho talk from many friends that are talking about coming up to visit some weekends in March!! Days are longer and Sun is out and I can't wait!

Hurry Up Spring

For some reason Wednesday's feel like the longest days ever lately. They mark only kinda half the week for me, considering I work every Saturday. Oh well. I think the weather is getting to me. Today was BRISK, but at least the sun was shining. I'm loving that the days are getting longer, slowly but surely. I just can't wait for spring!!!

My bed is against a huge window in my room and lately the sun has been shining really bright when I wake up in the morning. I pretend it's spring until I can make myself get out of bed and my toes hit the cold floor.

To speed up spring, I wore florals again. This is my bon fire outfit I talked about in my video blog. I liked the textures with the tights and the floral together.

Flower Power

Normally the mondays I have to work are filled with minimal adventure and lack of ability to think about much besides the minimal adventure, however today was pretty adventurous and lovely.

Cora's birthday was today. I bought her a chakra from Aveda and we both walked around smelling exceptionally wonderful today. We went and got pedicures (my feet have NEVER looked so good!!!) and went to a Mediterranean restaurant and had horrible service with exceptionally company. Sometimes, being in an industry that deals with taking care of people beauty needs, I forget to sit back and relax and let someone do it for me. Even getting my hair done by a co-worker isn't relaxing because technically I'm still at work. I sat back with the ladies and enjoyed every minute of it.

I was able to show off some of my new digs today in my outfit!

The response that I've been getting from my blog so far has been so awesome! Thank you all who continue reading. I always get really excited about posting!

Lately I've been feeling really frustrated on a few levels. I feel stagnate yet things are changing around me so quickly I feel like I'm in a whirlwind. It's hard to take when you've worked really hard for something and it's taken away from you before you can even get your foot in the door.

I need a vacation!

This is my typical work outfit. Most of my photos are taken at work so you can kind of see my attire. I can't wear jeans and I have to look somewhat professional and "in with the times" so most of what I wear is comfortable and has an edge of professionalism.

Every other Monday I have off. Today consisted of sleeping in and taking these Photos! How exciting. The winter is always cruel to my mindset. I'd rather stay inside all day long and wait winter out than be outside doing something productive. I hate it, but what do ya do. At least I get practice at procrastinating.

How was everyones Valentines Day? Kate and I went shopping, (I got a really cute dress that I can't wait to wear. I just have to get a sweater to go over it) got dinner, got ice cream, and sat on the couch all snuggled in our own blankets and watched Romeo and Juliet. We didn't realize how much of a cliche this was until it was all over! I promise! Romeo and Juliet was on tv... how can you pass that up!

Tonight we're going shopping for a dress for her to wear at a wedding this weekend in Michigan. We're going to urban outfitters and I'm going to try my darndist to have self control.... maybe. Hopefully.

I feel like I haven't updated in years and it's only been a few days! Whew. Kate and I planned a "Stupid Cupid" Bar hop, but it was a flop. We ended up at a show down town watching an amazing folk band called "Theodore." They had clarinets and saxaphones and banjos and everything!

One thing... I LOVE banjo! I hope to learn it some day, but now I'm a huge appreciator of that wonderful instrument.

Today I just wanted to stay warm. Cora gave me this sweater dress a while back in a clothing swap. Its super warm and comfy. I love the color.

Cozy Friday

After working a quadrabillion hours, today I had the day off. It's amazing what it does to not wake up to an alarm! I cleaned the apartment and caught up on blogs! Every so often I sit on the couch and just can't get up, and its OKAY! It also was another freezing day and I didn't have to go out! Thats the best part.

For some reason everyone and their mother was out while I took these photos outside on our "deck". (Kudos to all the girls that have to live with their tripods and truck them around with them where ever they go! ) We live in a complex with 5 other tenants and each apartment has a small deckish thing/ balcony. Its great in the summer. It leads out into an ally way. We live on a really neat part of Saint Louis, called The Loop. It has tons of awesome bars, clubs, music venues and restaurants from all over the world and we live within walking distance.

This vest I found at a boutique down on The Loop. Normally I would have NEVER bought this but I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone with my closet. I love how it looks in these photos! The texture is amazing and surprisingly I didn't get cold at all! I wore this to pick up a few things at the grocery store when I first purchased it and the lady checking me out was looking at me like I was crazy. Silly Lady!

Right now I'm watching Paper Heart. Have you seen it!? This is the cutest movie I have EVER seen. If you haven't seen it, you must!!

I've always had a hard time styling these pants. They're vintage and fit kinda funny at the top. The pants actually end where the boot starts. Today is the first time I styled them this way and I didn't mind it.

Monday, Bloody Monday

Shouldn't the song be "Monday, Bloody Monday?" I think so. I always knew I didn't like U2 for a reason. Monday is such lame day of the week! Unless I have a day off. Then it's awesome.

Cassidy left today. He lives in Michigan but is probably moving here in May! Like I mentioned in my last post, he's an amazing photographer. You can view his portfolio here! He also made all the vegan yummy treats, and I'll be looking forward to them until May onward!

My view on fashion is that I believe that fashion should be accessible. I understand that the fashions I wear are most of the time imitations of the "expensive" things, but hey... a $20 shirt is much more accessible than a $200. It's about piecing together things from all ends of your closet and making them work. You should take risks and be creative with what you have. I've never owned a Louis Vuitton bag and probably never will. Not saying that they're bad or that they aren't cute, I'm just not huge on big designers and either is my pocket book. Most everything that I own is thrifted, from forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and Small Boutiques. I think it is important to support your local business's and I make sure to check out the boutiques in my area before stopping by a big chain (if I have time to look.. sometimes you just need to know you'll find something).

So with that, here is one of my favorite outfits that I put together so far!

The camera we used was his... that he found on the side of the road!!!! It's a canon 5D. Such an amazing find. He turned it in and it was never accounted for so after 2 months it was his! How awesome is that!

Sweet Sweet Sunday

Photoshoot Photoshoot Photoshoot! Today (so far) has been excellent. THE Kathryn Moore (aka BFF) and THE Cassidy Knight (both amazing photographers and friends that I admire greatly) and I went out on a photo-fun-filled day! We drove all around Saint Louis and found great locations to shoot. It was FREEZING but the sun was out so it felt okay. I wore one of my favorite outfits ever (not pictured, photos coming soon). This outfit pictured I wore for part of the shoot. I also am really excited that I threw these things together and it worked. I really liked it and it too is a new fav.

Only One

I just had an amazing workout, followed by an amazing pickle.

My outfit was kinda a stretch today. The blue top is actually a dress! I pulled it all into that white skirt and put a belt over it. I felt a little too summery so decided to put a scarf on it... totally covering up the reason why I chose that dress as my top (for the collar). I could have worn any shirt. Oh well, the extra layers kept me warmer.

I've worn these boots three days in a row for two reasons. I've been working my butt off pretty hard core and my legs are so sore that I can't even think about putting my feet into heals. Two. I like them. So what? :)

My battery died before I could get any good shots of this outfit! Bummertown. So I only have one today.

Life in Slow Motion

Good news! I got a promotion! There's not much better than making goals and meeting them... and then being rewarded. I'm such a goal oriented person, driven by friendly competition in the work place and my own hand to pat myself on the back and its paid off. So lovely.

Isn't it a shame that you have to recognize the things important to you through someone else's struggle? My boss's wife is going through one of the hardest things she'll ever have to go through, her mother's battle with cancer. They're incredibly close, and have an incredibly close relationship with the entire family. His wife and his daughter both work with me, come to work looking a little more beaten up every day but maintains their professionalism and their drive to excell. They are completely present at meetings and always give new ideas. Their ability to be strong and positive really touches me. Another co-worker is going through something similar, his brother is also stuggling with cancer and had surgery to remove his lymph nodes today. I would have never known he was going through that until he later told me that day when they found out the surgery went well. Silently he was beating himself up for not being with his brother, but a three hour distance would have been too difficult. Today he took me to pick up my car from the mechanic and got me a latte. He jokes with his guests and is always smiling. He has such a inviting presence about him even in the hardest times.

I could keep going but here's my point (and something I briefly mentioned in my last post)... we're all going through something. All of us. We have the mom who's sick, the brother who's lost himself to drugs, the cousin who's battling cancer, the friend of a friend who's body detrioriating from ms, the cousin going through divorce, the aunt who's going bankrupt.

So with that, we have the option of focusing on these things and letting them consume us. We have the right to let it affect us. We also have the option to let it affect us, but still be there to encourage someone else, because guess what... They're going through something too.

We all are going through something.

To go through a major change in your life can be challenging on so many counts. I wasn't sure if I would update this for a while to let things settle but this blog is something that really keeps me excited. Lately I've been feeling many emotions, anything from sadness, to anger, to hardness, to breaking. How I look has been last on my mind. I almost didn't update this blog because I don't think my outfit is all that special, but I did at least try and put something together :).

I'm so excited for the feedback that I've received so far. You guys are all so great and I really love that you take the time to comment and check out my blog. Your encouragement will help me out of my rut! I know everyones going through something and I know we can all relate and I just want to let you know I appreciate you. Much love my readers!!

I promise this will be my only post regarding this. I'm sorry to be vague!

Today was a simple choice on my outfit. No scarves and not too many layers. I really love this dress and I love to showcase it by its self. The color is amazing.

Today was freezing!!!!!!!!!! St. Louis, didn't I move to you to be a wee bit warmer than Michigan? You are failing! Okay, granted in all actuality it is warmer here, but it doesn't feel like it so you're still not off the hook. Okay, yes you actually granted us a sunny day, which I loved don't get me wrong, but come on. You are trying way to hard at this whole winter thing.

annddd... next..

Today was a great day. After work Kate and I went to this fabulous restaurant called Pi. Its a pizza place that merges Chicago style pizza with different kinds pizzas from all over the nation. It is amazing. We started with a great appetizer of fresh bread and a giant clove of garlic (you make your own garlic bread). I opted for the salad this time with dried cranberries and almond slices. So yummy! She got a sun dried tomato pizza that was also great. Heres a little diddy - Obama loves Pi so much that he flew the chef to make him his own. Pretty neat!

Today I was really excited to wear my new boots from forever 21. I never got a great detailed picture of them, so i'll feature them in another post. I felt very work appropriate with a dash of chic with the blazer combo with leggings.

The Spark

Being a hairstylist has taught me a great deal about different types of people, how to handle certain situations, and how to connect. I meet many new people every day/month/year and I can see the perfect cut and color for them by just looking at them, without even an exchange of as much as a word of what they are actually in my chair to receive. I suggest a deeper part for a triangle face shape, an angled bob for soft features. I look at face shape, body type, and personal style. I'm to the point and I don't hesitate. I use my extended education and training to recommend what they need. However, nothing tells me more about a person than their eyes. I've grown into my profession based on eyes. What are these eyes telling me? Some are bright and excited, some are distant and distracted, some are unsure and skeptical, some are relaxed and comfortable, some are sad and lonely. With in the first minute of discussion, there is something that changes in their eyes once they let their guard down, something like a spark.

Sparks can be at any degree or extreme and I am extremely affected once I see it. As a professional, I need to see who I can be for this person and where my lines are. Are they looking for advice or will I cross a line if I give opinion. There have been a few guests that have told me they come to me because I'm the only person that tells them they're pretty. Others come to me to vent about husbands, kids, in-laws, or pets. Some come to me because I'm the only person that talks to them that day. I find huge responsibility in this. What if I'm off my game and their spark goes out?

Today I was moved by "the spark." This woman came to me after a hairstylist fried her hair to a point of no return. She needed to have 6 inches cut off and it would take 6 months to have healthy hair again with proper treatment. She had a "hopeless, please help me" spark about her and I focused on doing everything I could to have her trust me. Over the past few times we've been talking, I've understood that her spark wasn't just her hair. She opened up to me that her husband died of brain cancer 9 months after he was diagnosed two years ago. They didn't have great insurance and had to sell their house to pay or the doctors bills. She has two boys, one in highschool one in college. This woman has gone through so much. Something I notice though - she smiles as she's talking. Her painful story comes out with a certain ease. Today is the 4th time I've seen her and in one more haircut, her damaged ends will be completely gone.

I saw her watching me blowdry it in the mirror. I can see that she's looking at her hair. She's smiling. There is something different about her eyes. I tell her to run her hands through her hair, to feel it. She does, I can see the Spark. This time it's different though. This time I can see hope. I can see that she feels more confident than when she did when she walked through the door this time, let alone the first time I saw her. She feels beautiful again. When you look good, you feel good. We cut away her damaged ends... and maybe we cut away something more...

That's why I do what I do.

I'm sure I'll write more about this because I have a few clients that have similar stories. Thank you for reading, I am truly passionate about what I do.

Lately I’m really able to appreciate the people in my life. Everyone is so different from one another in so many ways and are amazing at so many things.

Today’s outfit was an interesting combo. I’m starting to realize I have nothing but grey, white, and black clothing, so wearing green I guess is pretty epic! Also with this realization, today I purchased canary yellow tights! I can’t wait to try them out!

I have some of the most amazing and beautiful friends in the world. I am so lucky to know and have them in my life. Last night my friends in All the Day Holiday played at the Firebird. If you haven't heard them, I highly suggest it. They are wonderful, fun, and encouraging people and I'm happy they get to sleep on my floor when they are in town. Michael, they're tour manager and photographer and I always find ourselves on some sort of photo escapade. Last night, at around 3am, we decided to go on a photo adventure! We turned the ISO up to 6500 and hit the cold streets of STL just outside my apartment and shot until we filled the card way too many times. After having way to much fun and trying to look serious for "i'm way too cool to smile" photos we finally got to sleep around 4:30am just for me to wake up at 7am. Ew.

I'm having fun piecing different things together in my closet. I feel like a little kid playing dress up.

New Friends.

Tonight I finally met the lovely and wonderful boys and girls that consist of the band, Deas Vail! Brandon's band has been long time close road buddies with them forever. He has talked about them ever since we met two years ago but every time they were around, I was either out of town or had to miss them for other random reasons. They are on tour with Owl City and were set to play at The Pageant, just a few blocks away from my apartment. It couldn't have been a more perfect! I met Brandon, Ethan, and Wes for dinner after work and we walked down to The Pageant, psyching ourselves up to be around of 11-16 year olds that swarmed the place due to Owl City. Right as we got there, we were told the show had been canceled. Boooo. The lead singer of Owl City's body decided twenty minutes before the show, it wanted to have kidney stones. Everyone was pretty bummed out. I'm sure Mr. Owl City was probably bummed above all (I hear Kidney Stones are brutal).

After some ho-humming we found ourselves at a thai place. Everyone I met tonight are beautiful and amazing people. I love being around people that are driven to do what they desire to do and have open hearts to new people and experiences. I'm really looking forward to the rescheduled show.

Today was a nice break form the frigid cold! It was in the 50's here in St. Louis. This outfit was comfortable and easy... until the downpour... there isn't anything like wet and cold tights!

Welcome to my very first blog! I've been intrigued by blogging to quite some time, and have a few blogs started that I'm even embarrassed to talk about because they're NEVER updated. However, I decided to try this out...and with fingers crossed... be somewhat successful at this. I mean, I did have a Livejournal at one point that I was able to update. By the way, remember livejournal?!

Anyway, I have a few hopes for this blog.

1. I'd love to merge my love for photography, fashion, and writing all in one area.

2. My love for photography doesn't necessarily mean I pick up my camera often. This will help. I'm a visual person and I love to document through pictures. I've never really had an outlet before... so I'm hoping this will help.

3. Maybe my closet will start to look a little more interesting. New clothes become boring old clothes for me quick, so I'm hoping if I maintain this as a fashion blog as well, it will force me to become creative with my clothes.

I love fashion. I love photography. I love writing... I mean, where can I possibly go wrong!
